**Each race as a "size", and "big" races seem to do more more damage per hit. So, those races then to have a < 1.00 xp modifier.
So, a giant half-troll may only earn xp at .90 a human, but he's also hitting harder, so it probably equals out.
Conversely, a sea-elf is a wimpy pale slime ball who probably can't hit for crap, so he gets a slight bonus at 1.20.

Each race comes with its characteristic abilities, resistances, susceptibilities. The abilities do not need practices/adepted like regular skills.
Some (most?) can also go and find and learn a special racial-skill in-game.

Race Class Restrictions

Not all races can be all class's. Here's a chart of which races can be each class:
