Please see the in-game help files on races, and the excellent data on [Rodpedia] for full information on Races.
This page just provides some basic info and quick-reference tables I like to have.
If you're new to the game, I'd point you towards my Newb Guide for help picking your first character race/class.
Race Class Restrictions
Not all races can be all class's. Here's a chart of which races can be each class:
| Dragonborn | Drow | Dwarf | Elf | Gith | Gnome | Half-Elf | Half-Ogre | Half-Orc | Half-Troll | Halfling | Human | Lizardman | Pixie | Sea-elf | Tiefling | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleric | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | ? | X | X | ||||||
| Druid | X | X | X | X | X | ? | X | X | X | |||||||
| Mage | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | ? | X | X | X | |||||
| Thief | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | ? | X | X | X | |
| Warrior | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | X | ? | X | X |
Lizardman is currently out-of-game. The help file hints that it might be a thing again in the future, but currently, nope.
Race Characteristics
Experience Modifiers Each race earns experience at a slightly different rate. Humans are the standard at a 1:1 whereas other races may earn slightly less or more experience per hit. The equation would be <experience> x <XP Rate> = XP.
- Bear in mind that these rates are really just adjusted to equalize xp earns. For example:
- The strength of your hit is a factor in xp earned. A hit that 'grazes' earns less than a hit that 'smites'.
 - Each race has a "size", and "big" races seem to do more more damage per hit. So, those races then have a < 1.00 xp modifier to compensate.
 - Small races that can't be big fighting types tend to have greater xp modifiers to compensate.

So, a giant half-troll may only earn xp at .90 compared to a human, but he's also hitting harder, so it probably equals out. A tiny pixie gets xp at 1.08, but they're 10 inches tall so, they probably need that. It all evens out.
Conversely, a sea-elf is a wimpy pale slime ball who probably can't hit for crap, so he gets a slight bonus at 1.20.
Native Abilities
Each race comes with a unique set of characteristic abilities, resistances, susceptibilities. The abilities do not need practices/adepted like regular skills.

Each race also has a special "race skill" that requires you to go out into the realms to find and learn.
