Thief
About
- Rodpedia: Thief
- Genre: Rogue
- Races: Drow, Dwarf, Elf, Gith, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Ogre, Half-Orc, Half-Troll, Halfling, Human, Pixie, Sea-elf, Tiefling
- Race Recommendation: Historically, H-Orc/Ogre/Troll so they can wear like one specific piece of eq to min/max DR. Which was always kinda silly and kinda still is. These days with prestige options you might want to consider something that can prestige as a Thief-Whatever. See Here
- Alpha Attack: Circle
- Martial weapon attack, requires short-blade, requires initiative vs. mob (see below)
- Damage based on DR (uncapped) (there is also some eq that gives a bonus to circle damage)
- HP Gained per Level: 12 - 17 (avg 14.5)
- Prestige: 13 - 19
- Average Hitpoints: (non-prestige) You'll approach an average of 14.5 hp/level, if you end up at 14 or 15 you'll be a tad low/high to the overall average:
- Avg 14: 716
- Avg 14.5: 740
- Avg 15: 765
In my experience I usually land in the 720-740 range.
Stats
- Primary: Dexterity
- Secondary: Charisma
- Deficient: Wisdom
| CLASS | Str | Int | Wis | Dex | Con | Cha | Lck |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thief | 20 | 20 | 18 | 25 | 20 | 22 | 18 |
Suggested Stats: Dex 18, Str 16+, Luck 16+.
An argument could be made for training Con over Luck too. (Luck is involved in circle's hit rate, and has been traditionally maxed as much as possible, however in testing it over several hundred circles it honestly doesn't seem to make a major observable difference anyways).

Equipment & Align
Thieves 'circle' alpha-attack is based on DR, thieves dress to max DR above all else.
- Devout: Fairly uncommon, difficult to achieve high DR as a new player
- Neut: The most popular align for thieves, unlocks high DR equipment pieces
- Evil: The easiest align to dress a thief for, will achieve decently high DR
- Subject to mobs having 'protection' spell reducing damage by 1/4.

Gameplay
Quests:
- Rogue Genre Quest: Guise of the Falcon
Misc:
- Thieves (Rogues in general) pick locks, steal, and can peek into a mobs inventory.
Runs:
Thieves were the defacto run character for years, and they can still do that, but also many mobs have anti-circle progs to block them out. There are ample runs a thief can participate in, too many to list.
Summary
Thieves are the boomers of realms. For years and years they were the 'best' character since circle is uncapped and scales with DR, they hit the hardest and having high dex (25) makes them great hitters.
These days, with Prestige options, there are plenty of characters that can be used for various runs, there are only a few left where you would really want/need to bring a Thief.
Gameplay-wise, they're boring. They get no magic, no fun skills, they just hit. Circle has long lag (4 bars), so its basically a game of circling.... waiting to see how much damage you eat.... quaff to full, circle again..... repeat until you die of old age. There is not much more to them.
Thieves are needed a full places just to pick locks, detrap, etc. At this point that's basically the only time I use mine. (I was primarily a Thief for like the first 15 years I played, turns out that was a horrible idea, and I find all the other classes vastly more fun now).
Prestige
- Thief-Multiclass Options:
- Thieves can cross with: Warrior, Cleric, Druid, Mage
Prestige options do make thieves more versatile than their old boomer versions. However, many people with 'old' thief characters will be races that cannot multi with the magic caster classes, for example a Half-Orc thief can only become a Thi-War because Half-Orcs cannot be Mages, Clerics, or Druids.
Thief-Warrior just adds some additional beef, which is cool, but its mostly invisible auto-stuff that you don't really get to use, you just "are" better.
Thief-Druid is pretty sick, and probably the best one. Get useful spells, makes thieves much more independent adventurers.
Thief-Mage and Thief-Cleric are both fine, I don't really know anyone in love with either, but they're fine. Crossing with Druid kinda gives you similar stuff but a longer list of spells so, not sure what going thi-mag or thi-cle gives you that would really be 'worth it' comparatively.
